Shoes: Steve Madden Chopin

Obviously I wouldn't draw them if they weren't cute, but, really, how does one walk in them?

Most of my latest doodles were done in my Moleskine Pocket Plain Book, which is terrible for watercolor. Why did I keep on doing watercolor in them then? Well, the truth was that most of the time I didn't plan to use watercolor first. The notebook is small, portable, and always in my backpack, so no wonder that I always go to it. Maybe it's time for me to get a Moleskine Pocket Watercolor Book, or, better, make a 3"x5" one myself!

Media: technical pens, watercolor.

The composition is really nice on this one. I like the symmetry of the shoes broken up by the asymmetry of the right shoe cutting in from the of the left.

And having seen shoes like those, I have to say that contour lines on the soles (wood, yes?) really capture them.

That said, this one feels a little tight. So many of your drawings have a nice fluid feel to them. This one does not feel as loose as normal.

I'm trying to pinpoint what it is giving me that impression. Perhaps the way that the outlines wobble, like you were trying to slowly trace with your eye rather than capture in one motion. Or maybe I am just projecting, since I often have problems with my lines wobbling for just that reason.

Still, a good choice of subject, good composition, and good color choice. (I just realized how much I like the very soft color washes that you give to the backgrounds. Yea!)

I'm looking forward to seeing what you share with us in the coming weeks, now that you are back and on your regular schedule.

Tschuess.

Can't take credits on the composition. I got my model from:

It is tight, because this time I didn't repeat any line to "fix" my mistake, and personally I like looser style. This is an experiment, and hopefully next time I'll do a better job. :)
