A Metro Door

I always wanted to draw the door when taking Taipei Metro, but I was too imtimidated to do it. This is a quick sketch of a photo I took. Maybe next time I'll have the guts of drawing in public.

Media: technical pen, watercolor.

It is probably weird that this is one of my favorites of your recent drawings. I mean, the subject matter is not normally what I think of when I think "art."

I am impressed with how well you captured the people. (The leg on the left and the person lounging against the partition on the right.) I always find people difficult to breathe life into. Clothes always seem really stiff. You have done a really nice job even using just sparse lines.

And the coloring really adds alot. The gradation in the blue on the partition gives a nice sense of translucency and depth. This is something that I always love about watercolor, and to my untrained eye, it seems like a good choice and nice execution.

And again, the color enhances the softness of the fabric clothing the people. Even the pant cuff of the left has a sense of drap and conture.

Keep up the good work.

Interesting... These days I just draw whatever interests me. If I plan to draw something "arty", I don't know if I can even do it. "Art" strikes me as serious and formal; I'd better not think about it when I draw, or I'll never publish anything to my blog. :)

("drape and contour" - don't know how I managed to butcher that so badly.)

I guess the point that I was trying to make is that you have managed to make something that I don't normally think of in an artistic content into art. To me it just says that you have a good eye, and that is just as important in art as the technique side.

I do agree that you should focus on subjects that interest you, rather than forcing yourself to constantly rehash the standard, accepted subjects. That doesn't make it not art, though, at least the way that I view art.

Whatever you think of it as, just keep at it.
